Hang On: A Mind-Body Approach to Pull-Ups and Hanging

  • Pacific Time United States (map)

Pull-ups aren't inaccessible. You just haven’t developed the pieces.

Have you ever wondered why some people are able to pull themselves up in a way that looks easy? Or when they hang from a bar it looks like they could hang out there for hours, as though it’s more comfortable than lying on the couch with their legs up?

Whether you are an aerialist or ground based mover who wants to develop more skill in hanging and pulling, or you are someone who has always wanted to be able to do a pull-up, this 6-week live class will give you the tools you need to feel more connected, stronger, and more coordinated with your hanging and pulling strength.

Here's what makes hanging and pull-ups different from most strength work. These types of skills require short doses at first. Tendons and connective tissue adapt slower than muscle does, so you can't just add load the way you would with a barbell. The early sessions will focus on shoulder prep and brief hanging work. As your capacity builds, you will notice a direct shift towards longer hangs and real pulling strength.

You'll also work on the part that's harder to program: the mind-body connection to hanging itself. Trusting your grip. Knowing what your shoulders are doing when your feet leave the ground. That awareness is as much a part of this as the strength is.

What we'll work on

Over six weeks, we'll build from the ground up:

  • Shoulder and grip prep to build the foundation most pull-up training skips

  • Supported hanging progressions to build tolerance, confidence, and body awareness

  • Ring and stall bar work to groove the pulling pattern before you're doing it under full bodyweight (a beam you can hold on to works if you don’t have access to stall bars)

  • Progressive hanging and pulling work as your capacity builds

Progress won't look identical for everyone, but everyone will see improvement. You’ll learn to track your own capacity, not someone else's timeline.

FAQ
What equipment do I need?

You'll need:

  • A pull-up bar that can support your body weight

  • Rings*

  • Light dumbbells (3–5 lbs)

  • A slightly heavier dumbbell (8–15 lbs)

  • A yoga block

  • Light stretchy bands (Therabands or jump bands)

  • A beam, pole, or stall bars you can hold onto while lying down

*If you struggle with grip strength, I recommend adding these straps to your set-up.

I can't do a pull-up or hang for long periods of time. Is this going to help me?

Yes! While I can't guarantee you'll be able to do a pull-up at the end of the six weeks, I can guarantee you'll be on your way to achieving your first bodyweight pull-up.

I can do a pull-up. Is this worth my time?

Maybe. If you want to establish a strong mind-body connection, improve your internal map of your shoulder, or build a stronger internal sense of what's happening so you can work toward higher-level hanging and pulling skills, then yes. This is also worth your time if you teach or coach movements that involve pulling and you struggle to find the language or progressions to build hanging capacity and shoulder awareness in others.

I have an injury and want to get back to pulling and hanging work. Is this appropriate for me?

Maybe. If you've been cleared by your doctor or physical therapist to return to exercises like pull-ups, this could be a good starting place. Please reach out to me directly and we can figure out together whether this cohort is a good fit.
